Shantaram - achtergrond informatie over Bombay van Gregory David Roberts, opgedaan tijdens zijn vijfjarig verblijf.

This book is an interesting blend of fact and fiction and a remarkable insight into Indian life beyond the tourist trail. It reads like a series of anecdotes interspersed by long conversations and philosophical debates, which being well written do not detract from the story. The characters are no doubt based on real people and they are well developed and believable. Bombay is wonderfully described, the period where the main character Lim lives in the slum, reveals the dignity and respect people have for each other, even though they live in a slum which is a surprisingly well ordered society. Lim also ends up in Afghanistan with the mujaheddin, the book being set in the 1980’s and his description of the mind set of the people there towards foreign invaders only empathises our own poor prospects there.
