Engelstalige pelgrimgids. De geschiedenis van het pelgrimeren naar Santioago de Compostella, in twee banden met de manuscripten en de teksten vanaf de vroege middeleeuwen. The Pilgrim's Guide to Santiago de Compostela, Critical Edition in Two VolumesVolume I The Manuscripts & Volume II The Text by Alison Stones, Jeanne Krochalis, Paula Gerson, Annie Shaver-CrandellHarvey Miller Publishers Volume I The Manuscripts, Their Creation, Production and reception This volume presents a fresh interpretation of the origins of the so-called Pilgrim's Guide, and its dissemination and recetion over six centuries, based on a new analysis of the twelve extant manuscripts and a collection of their variants. The twelve manuscripts of the Pilgrim's Guide date from the twelfth of the eighteenth centuries. One is English, one Italian; the rest were all made in the Iberian peninsula, the earliest probably produced in part by French craftsmen working in Santiago de Compostela about 1138.The authors examine for the first time the hostory of their diffusion, which includes evidence provided by the collation of about another dozen lost copies. Until the eighteenth century, all the manuscripts were made for or owned by members of the Church, from monks and clergy to bishops and archbishops, and even popes. For us, the great merit of the Guide is the continuing interest of what the compilers knew and had to tell about life, customs and pilgrimage in the second quarter of the twelfth century. Moreover, the detailed Catalogue of Manuscripts, with its extensive bibliographies and numerous illustrationsprovides an importantcontribution to palaeography and cultural history.296 pages, 88 illustrationsVolume II The Text, Annotated English TranslationIn this volume, the reader is offered the first critical edition of the Latin text of the Guide, based on the earliest surviving copy of the Guide, the Codex Calixtinus in the Archivo de la Catedral de Santiago de Compstela, annotated and collated with the other eleven extant manuscripts.
